Last night, on 17 October 2024, I had the privilege of attending the opening performance of WGRUV Dance Company’s "Trilogy of Notes - A Symphony of Dance" at the Star Theatre in Cape Town. The evening was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the remarkable talent and creativity that WGRUV has become known for.

The performance opened with "Vivace Motifs", choreographed by the acclaimed Jessica Lang. From the very first movement, it was evident that this piece was designed to mesmerise. Lang's choreography, celebrated for its visual beauty and emotional depth, set a tone of elegance that resonated throughout the theatre. The dancers moved in perfect harmony, their fluidity reflecting the intricate nuances of the music. The vibrant costumes and evocative lighting further enhanced the overall aesthetic, creating a stunning visual tapestry.
Next came "Permission to Fall", an original work by Brad Beakes. This piece was a contemporary narrative that invited introspection, with choreography that beautifully captured the complexity of human emotions. The music, composed by Ryan Lot and Ymusic, was a perfect complement to the dancers’ movements, drawing the audience deeper into the story. It was a rich and contemplative experience, and the performers delivered with heartfelt sincerity.
The evening culminated in the 1950s with "The Weight of a Moment", choreographed by Michael Trusnovec. Featuring live musician Emmanuel Paul on bass, this piece was a delightful blend of nostalgia and artistry. The dancers executed Trusnovec's choreography with a charm that echoed the timeless elegance of the era, transporting the audience to a space filled with romance and joy. The live music added an extra layer of excitement, enriching the performance with a vibrancy that had the audience tapping their feet.
WGRUV Dance Company’s commitment to artistic excellence was evident throughout the performance. Each piece showcased the company’s unique ability to blend classical techniques with contemporary narratives. The dancers’ passion and skill were palpable, creating an emotional connection that left a lasting impression on everyone in the audience.
Artistic Director Holly Gruver’s vision for the production was clearly realized, as "Trilogy of Notes" was more than just a series of performances; it was a profound exploration of the human experience through the medium of dance. The evening was filled with moments of reflection, joy, and sheer delight.
As I left the theatre, I found myself reflecting on "Permission to Fall". This piece resonated deeply, inviting the audience to consider our own life experiences and the courageous leaps we often must take. It beautifully captured the essence of vulnerability and the importance of embracing uncertainty as we navigate our journeys. The choreography spoke to the moments when we find ourselves at a crossroads, facing decisions that require not just bravery but also trust in ourselves and others. WGRUV Dance Company’s commitment to creating hope through soulful artistic storytelling was palpable in this performance. It reminded us that while falling can be daunting, it also offers the chance for growth, transformation, and connection. "Permission to Fall" did more than entertain; it moved and inspired, leaving a lasting impression that urged each of us to have the courage to take that leap, even when the outcome is unknown. The evening was a celebration of resilience, reminding us that every fall is a step toward something greater.
