If last night was any indication of what’s to come, then consider me officially hooked on Opera UCT! The Third Season Launch at the Baxter Concert Hall was a breathtaking showcase of talent, passion, and world-class artistry. From the very first note, the performers had the audience captivated, delivering powerful duets, trios, quartets, and choral pieces from some of the most beloved operas in history.

The evening featured selections from La Bohème, Rigoletto, and Porgy and Bess, each performance more spellbinding than the last. The depth of emotion and sheer technical skill displayed by Opera UCT’s rising stars was nothing short of phenomenal. It was impossible not to be swept away by the grandeur of the music and the passion of the performers.
One of the highlights of the night was the insight provided by Professor Jeremy Silver, director of Opera UCT, who guided the audience through the repertoire with fascinating anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories about the performers. His enthusiasm and knowledge added an extra layer of appreciation for the incredible talent nurtured at Opera UCT.
The performance was followed by a delightful meet-the-cast reception, where guests had the chance to mingle with the stars of the evening over a glass of wine. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear firsthand about their journeys, aspirations, and the rigorous training that has shaped them into the remarkable artists they are today.
Among the performers was the phenomenal Luvo Maranti, an Operalia finalist who is currently making waves on the international opera scene. It was also a joy to celebrate his recent engagement to fellow Opera UCT graduate and National Opera Studio artist, Moloko Letsoalo—an exciting love story that adds even more charm to this month’s celebrations!
The launch was just the beginning of an exciting 2025 season, which promises a lineup of must-see productions, including a major performance of Die Fledermaus, Opera UCT’s participation in SHORTS: A Festival of Short Operas in March, and concerts at the HEAT Winter Arts Festival. The season will also feature annual competitions, masterclasses, and special concerts, reinforcing Opera UCT’s reputation as South Africa’s leading opera training institution.
For anyone who missed out on this unforgettable evening, don’t make the same mistake twice! Keep an eye on Opera UCT’s upcoming performances—you won’t want to miss the chance to witness these future stars before they take the world by storm.
