Cape Town Festive Lights Switch-On: A Sparkling Start to the Holiday Season

The countdown to Cape Town’s most magical night of the year has begun! The annual Festive Lights Switch-On is back, and this year’s line-up promises to be bigger and better than ever. On Sunday, December 1st, the Grand Parade and Adderley Street will come alive with lights, music, and an unbeatable festive spirit, bringing locals and visitors together to kick off the holiday season in style.


Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Table Mountain, this free event has become a cherished tradition in the Mother City. Now in its 55th year, the theme “Cape Town: People of Hope” celebrates the resilience, unity, and optimism that define Cape Town. The festivities start at 4 pm, giving everyone plenty of time to soak in the vibrant atmosphere, enjoy the entertainment, and get ready for the magical moment when the lights come on at 8:45 pm.


Cape Town’s Festive Lights Switch-On is known for showcasing some of South Africa’s best musical talent, and this year is no exception. From afro-pop to soul and reggae, the line-up is a proud representation of South Africa’s diverse music scene:

  • Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels: Known for their timeless reggae hits like I Love To Truck, Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels will bring their infectious energy to the stage, making sure the crowd is grooving along.

  • Mafikizolo: This legendary afro-pop duo will take the stage with their iconic blend of jazz, kwela, and pop. Mafikizolo’s vibrant sound and captivating performances are sure to create an unforgettable experience for all ages.

  • Three Tons of Fun: Known for their high-energy performances, this popular trio will keep the party going with their powerhouse vocals and dance-inducing hits.

  • Candice Thornton: Cape Town’s own soul songstress, Candice Thornton, will grace the stage with her powerful, soulful vocals, adding a touch of elegance and heartfelt emotion to the line-up.


Hosting the event are two of South Africa’s most beloved comedians, Alan Committie and Lunga Tshuka, who are guaranteed to keep the audience entertained with their humor and charm throughout the evening.


The Grand Parade will be transformed into a festive wonderland complete with food stalls, family-friendly activities, and unique entertainment. The event's build-up will include fun for all ages, from kids' play areas to live music and dance performances. So, whether you’re there to enjoy the food, dance to your favorite hits, or take in the holiday lights, there’s something for everyone.


The highlight of the evening is the “switch-on” moment, scheduled for 8:45 pm, when the beautiful lights of Adderley Street will illuminate Cape Town. This tradition has grown in popularity over the years, symbolizing the start of the holiday season and the unity of Cape Town’s vibrant community.

As Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis stated, “This year’s line-up will certainly get me into the holiday spirit as it speaks to the joy, unity, and vibrancy that make Cape Town the heart of the holiday season in South Africa.”
